How much space does a guinea pig need?
Guinea pigs are active animals that run, hide and explore along the ground, so floor space matters more than height. Welfare groups such as the RSPCA and the Humane Society advise at least 7.5 square feet (0.7 square meters) for one or two guinea pigs. Larger groups need more room, and bigger is always better than the minimum.
| Guinea pigs | Minimum floor space | Recommended floor space |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 7.5 sq ft (0.7 m²) | 7.5 sq ft or more (plan for a pair) |
| 2 | 7.5 sq ft (0.7 m²) | 10.5 sq ft (1.0 m²) |
| 3 | 10.5 sq ft (1.0 m²) | 13 sq ft (1.2 m²) |
| 4 | 13 sq ft (1.2 m²) | 16 sq ft (1.5 m²) |
| 5 | 16 sq ft (1.5 m²) | 19 sq ft (1.8 m²) |
These figures are for girls or neutered mixed groups. Boys usually need more space, so this calculator adds about 25% for groups of males.
Tips for choosing a cage
- Only the floor counts. Lofts and upper levels do not add to the required floor space.
- Measure the real floor area. Many pet-store cages are smaller than the recommended size, so check the numbers before you buy.
- Consider a C&C cage. Cubes and coroplast cages are easy to build to any size and are popular with owners.
- Keep guinea pigs in pairs. They are social animals and are happiest with a companion.
Frequently asked questions
What size cage do 2 guinea pigs need?
At least 7.5 square feet (0.7 square meters) as a minimum, and 10.5 square feet (1 square meter) or more is recommended so they have room to run and hide.
Do cage lofts count toward the cage size?
No. Guinea pigs roam on the ground, so only the floor space on one level counts toward the minimum.
Do boys need a bigger cage than girls?
Males generally need more space, especially when two boys live together. That is why this calculator adds about 25% for groups of males.
Is the minimum size good enough?
The minimum is the smallest space that meets welfare guidelines, not the ideal. If you have room, a larger cage gives your guinea pigs more space to exercise and helps keep the cage cleaner.
